MERI

Sea and Salt on Your skin

There are moments that make you run out of breath and out of words. There is no rational way to describe what you are feeling and what is going on. That is why we have music. The three songs on my upcoming EP have all grown from the same ground - the aim to illustrate feelings and experiences that cannot be captured in a simple explanation. Maybe somewhere there, between the lines you will find your story, your experience. That is what makes art and music so valuable and beautiful - only complete when shared. There is no right or wrong in experience and creativity. When nothing else makes sense anymore, music always does. Since as long as we have music, we have freedom to feel and freedom to be who we really are. Close our eyes and dive into the sound, live freely for at least those few minutes floating by.

So here is my music. Three songs will be coming out one song at a time during the end of 2017. First one is Radiant, the 31st of October. Hope they will give you something. Freedom, love, wonder, confusion, joy - or something completely else. I would love hear what it is. Feel free to leave a comment.

Dear everyone, this is Sea and Salt on Your Skin.

Love,
Meri

The summer ended yesterday. So did your love to me. It disappeared together with the last bit of summer breeze. Just like that, like nothing ever happened. Today was the first clear autumn day. Fresh like a blank piece of paper. And I knew it was time to turn the page. Sky was clear and I was standing on a cliff by the sea, looking at the cruise ships float by and city open up behind the rough harbor scene. I wanted to float away too. Escape everything and everyone, sail behind the horizon and fall into the unknown. There were way too many questions running through my head. Who was I? Who were you? What happened to us this summer? And, why did you go?

You walk in, unexpected. Your presence fills the room and from the very moment our eyes meet I can feel the extraordinary unity between us. You release something in me. Energy. Radiance. Your light spreads all over me. All the colors of the world suddenly make sense to me. All the windows open and let the sun in. You say something to me. Your words are like diamonds that I collect and keep. I am free. This is something fresh, new and unique. Structures and patterns that I used to believe in melt into each other and form something new. Surrounded by the music, you take my hand and I feel the stream of energy floating through my body. There is such a beauty in movement. Radiance.

The car lights turn into flashes in the night. A drive in the middle of the night. We are invincible, capable of anything. In this moment I feel totally alone and part of the universe. Freedom. City lights shine in the night. We are driving outside the city. To adventure, to the unknown under a sky full of stars. So in love it makes me want to explode. So inspired you cannot keep all the energy inside. These moments are so small and so great at the same time. To meet someone who you can reveal yourself to. We become free together. We release each other.

SEA AND SALT | 12/2017

I lean back. The cold seawater reaches up to my neck as I fall down. I am becoming one with the ocean. Melting in. Falling with the water. Floating. No clear picture of where I'm going, no clear picture of anything. Memories. Dreams. Deep, deep feelings. The past, the current and the future blend in together. Where does dream end and reality begin? Where do I end and you begin? Was everything how I remember it or will I always be blind? Shattered thoughts in the bottom of the sea. Pieces of a shattered mind. The ocean. Like me. Clear mirror to the skies, powerful storm in the night.

I'm All EARS

This is crazy. Crazy. That is pretty much the word that repeats in my head on Saturday morning in the car on my way to the airport. Maybe it is the way too few hours of night sleep or the fact that I still haven’t had the chance to have my morning coffee but I feel like I am out of place – in a good way. I have just spent two days at EARS, European Asian Roundtable sessions, an event bringing together creative professionals from Europe and Asia. Under the streetlights, gliding forward on an empty highway I am still trying to figure out what exactly happened during my two-day stay in Helsinki. One thing I know: It was freaking awesome.

As many of us know, conferences are places where you go to meet people interested in the same theme or working with the same kind of stuff. You listen to keynotes about the latest trends, book meetings, exchange business cards, pitch your ideas, network your ass off and after the day go to the mingle party to network some more. At EARS we got to do all that but also so much more. What that “more” is comes down to the people and the atmosphere we create together. So let me introduce you a few of them in the following posts. They are VoleR Creative CEO Dillon Seo, executive producer and A&R Deekei and music director of Magnetic Asia Justin Sweeting.

PS. If you wanna know more about EARS I definitely think you should check out my dear friend Wan Wei's learnings from the event! Read her story at The Hieno.

First morning at Maria Startup.

Dillon Seo | EARS

I walk the streets of Helsinki in the morning sun and find my way to Start-up Maria around half past nine on Thursday. I have been contacting a few speakers for an interview and one of them will be the first keynote speaker. He is Dong Il Dillon Seo, a co-founder of Oculus Rift and the CEO of his own company VoleR Creative that creates an immersive dating simulation based on Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence.

Seo talks about how Virtual Reality can revolutionize peoples’ lives. It is fascinating how trough VR we can be anything, be anywhere and do anything. Time and space will no longer limit us. The new user interface will change our experience from seeing to feeling the things happening around us. “VR is a tool, a way to express our imagination”, he summarizes as an answer to the moderators question about wether VR itself is a product or a platform. As an artist myself I am mind blown by the thought. Who wouldn’t want to visit another person’s imaginary worlds in such an immersive environment?

As we later on sit down to talk, Dillon Seo tells me about how he got started with virtual reality and Oculus Rift.

“The concept of virtual reality has been around for a long time. Many movies and books had played with the idea, but the technology to make it real was missing.”

He tells how the founder team of Oculus Rift were all involved in gaming and wanted to play games in virtual reality.

“So we wanted to build a headset for ourselves so that we could play virtual reality games and then the whole thing kind of exploded”

It turns out that a movie, “Her”, has been an inspiration for his new business idea. “Her”, is a story about a lonely introverted guy who falls in love with a female operating system. There are a lot of similarities with the story and VoleR Creative’s business idea.

Seo describes how the problem with the artificial intelligence (female OS) in the movie is that she doesn’t really have a look or a physical form so the guy needs to imagine her. In one of the scenes female OS hires a prostitute to visit the guy so that they could also have a physical relationship. The girl’s appearance doesn’t really match the mental image the guy has created so the whole situation turns out quite weird.

“That for example won’t be a problem with our AI, since they will have an appearance from day one”, Seo explains.

Dillon Seo believes that virtual reality will struggle a couple of years until there will be enough content to attract critical amount of users. But then it can transform our society and people will start to live in virtual reality more and more.

“Think about it – time and space will no longer limit us, neither our physical condition or appearance. Real world is not fare and we are all born with different conditions. But think about gaming world. It is fare. Mr Nobody in the real world can be Mr Somebody in the gaming world if you just put in the hours. No one knows or cares about your appearance or social status.”

So it all comes back to the compelling idea of getting to be who we have always dreamed to be and to do what we have always wanted to do.

But doesn’t it feel a little sad to know that all that beauty and success is not real? Isn’t it scary if we in the end isolate ourselves and loose the real life contact with each other?

“We are already isolated. We can sit by the same table and message each other about going out for a lunch instead of just opening our mouths. It is safer. We want to keep our personal space.”

But why is that so important?

“People are afraid of emotions.”

As terrifying as it sounds, I cannot disagree with him. It just feels sad to think that people rather distance themselves from others than take the risk of being rejected.

Our conversation leaves me both tremendously inspired and thoughtful. Virtual reality will help people to be present at events and in situations that they would have missed due to distance, lack of time or physical restrictions. It can help us keep connected in a holistic way and be a platform for creation and expression. But there is also a problematic side to it, which might push us even further away from each other. It will be interesting to see how it all turns out.

The fascinating fact is that virtual reality will give us a possibility to express and experience our wildest dreams.
